Installing R2 Upgrade on Windows Server 2003 SP2
A few months ago we decided to upgrade to R2 our Windows 2003 SP2 File Server so that we can install Quotas on user's folders. As per Microsoft's documentation, the installation procedure is very simple ... when you are on SP1. Nothing is mentioned on the error you get when you are on SP2 and try to install R2. On the internet there are a few articles but not much on this particular configuration. It is quite surprising because this, among others, can be a free quota solution for you organisation (I cannot say that this is a "perfect" solution because I tested it very little and not yet in production). Anyway, as far as I tested it, I was happy with the result: it synchronises automatically, with the AD and sends you and e-mail (when SMTP server details are configured) with the profile name that bypassed the quota set on a folder. Just what we needed !!! Anyways, we found this solution on this blog, so I thank Vittorio for this tip that works like a charm. I wanted to post some photos concerning the installation but I think there's no need for that. Everything is well explained on Microsoft's site and with Vittorio's tip you cannot fail. I would only add to this tip that, once you modify the file, you can burn the files on a cd and then use it for the installation.
